Chapter 54: Standing on Ceremony

Image
“Obviously we will hold the wedding reception at Myrddhin House. All the brides are members of House Myrddhin after all.” “Fiona, you don’t know how good it feels to hear that. To know that.” I said. “It’s like a warm hug,” Amy agreed. Fiona grinned, “Indeed. This arrangement is something for which I did not plan, but which I now wish to keep and protect.” We basked in the glow for several minutes before anyone spoke again. “As I said, the reception will occur at Myrddhin House. We need to decide on a location for the ceremony. To be legal it will need to be a government building or a church. A church of the Twice Dead Gods would be acceptable, although I don’t venerate them. A fairy shrine would also be good. The Lady of Unification seems appropriate. And there is an ancient shrine upon Chateau-Colline Hill above the city that is still active. As we were speaking, Wentworth walked into the drawing room. “Your Excellency, you have a visitor at the door. It is His Grace, Duke Delm...

Chapter 53: Afterglow

It was midnight before the guests began to drift away from the party. It was two in the morning before Wentworth confirmed that the last guests had left the grounds. We staggered back to Fiona’s room, all more than a little drunk. Opening the door to her bedroom, Fiona’s spartan one person bed greeted us. “Yes, of course.” Fiona said, “We should move to one of the guest rooms.” “My guest room had a queen-sized bed.” I answered, “What about yours Amy?” “Mine was a queen as well.”   I smiled to myself. I was sure the terms king and queen sized were modern. Not that it mattered. I was happy with the game designers choosing such modern conveniences. I preferred it to them doing their full diligence on historical accuracy. I preferred a sanitized Victorian era to the real thing. “Is there a guest room with a king-sized bed, Fiona? Or must we make do?” I asked. “The guest room at the back, furthest from the stairs, has the only king-sized bed. How stable is everyone on their feet? Can we...

Chapter 52: A Long-Awaited Engagement

Image
Life may have been good, but we still had formalities to observe. First on the list was for Fiona to induct Amy and myself into House Myrddhin. And there was an official ceremony for that. Fiona explained that she would lead the ceremony. But the Master of Arms for House Myrddhin would perform the bulk of the ceremony. This was Lady Cora Myrddhin. She was the woman who had delivered Quincy.  Fiona explained the ceremony was short as ceremonies go. And the only thing the ceremony required of us was that we memorized a few lines and then drew a sword from a scabbard. Fiona drilled us on the lines for a week. She also let us practice drawing a long sword from a scabbard, as neither of us had ever done that before. The hardest part of drawing a sword turned out to be getting it started. The scabbard fit flush at the crossbar. And the initial pull had to wrench it free. Not that it was hard. But it did require more effort than I had expected. The ceremony took place in Myrddhin House’s ...

Chapter 51: A New Home

And so, Amy and I moved into Myrddhin House. Lynn allowed me back into House Octavian. So, we were able to collect my belongings and move them to Myrddhin House. It was as though I were a member of House Octavian marrying into a different house. Quincy came with us as well. He sat on my lap in the carriage and pushed his head out of the window. As we rode the carriage back with the last load of belongings, we turned to a necessary conversation. “So, how do we go about getting the three of us married?” I asked, “Are there official rules? It isn’t illegal, so there must be some precedent for how to do this. Do we do separate marriages? Or do we have one ceremony with all of us?” “Hang precedent,” Fiona said, “I will marry both of you together. We will marry as a unit unless either of you object.” “I like that.” Amy said. “I agree,” I said, “Otherwise we would need three ceremonies. So that leads us to the second question. Who wants to wear what? I want a wedding gown. I assume Amy does a...
